Teaching Methods

What are your favorite teaching methods and why? Which method do you have most experience in?

  1. I'm not a teacher yet. Hopefully I'll have my masters in a 2-3 years and be teaching art. I don't know if this will answer your question, but I'll give it a try.

I feel that every student that comes in contact with you in the classroom should be comfortable in their own abilities. I want to be able to express to each one that art is something that they can learn to do. I cannot stand it when someone, no matter the age, says "I can't draw." Everyone can if shown the proper guidence. I would like to have a class where everyone can discuss openly their ideas and not be afraid to speak their thoughts. I feel that personal experience is what makes art the journey of our lives.

This is probably not a teaching method, but if you can find one that is similar, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks.

  2. One of my favorite teaching methods is just having an informal class discussion on a particular piece of art or artist. I will ask very broad open-ended questions alot to the students and just let them share their own answers. It is a great exercise to do with them because it gets them thinking about art on their own. I ask a lot of "whys" to get them to justify their reactions and feelings about art. At their age (middle school) they are growing out of that stage of following instructions blindly and starting to enter the stage where they question things and need to know whys and hows. Its always interesting to hear their interpretations of what they see.
